Spinal Fusions Depend On Adult Stem Cells

Adult stem cells promote bone tissue growth crucial for spinal fusions.

This is Important  because up to thirty-five percent of spinal fusions fail and sixty-percent of fusions cause chronic pain due to lack of bone growth after fusion.

“A lack of effective new bone growth after fusion can be a significant problem, especially in surgeries involving multiple spinal segments,” said Schrot, co-principal investigator for a UC Davis August  study. Researchers at UC Davis inserted donor stem cells into the front of adult male’s neck to help relieve his chronic pain and help grow new bone.

This new approach also may avoid having to harvest a bone graft from the patient’s own hip or using bone from a deceased donor.
